Public Information

The Mission of the SVHCD is to maintain, improve and
restore the health of everyone in our community.

Sonoma Valley Hospital was founded in 1946 as a non-profit district hospital with a publicly elected Board of Directors. Directors serve four-year terms, with elections taking place during general elections for local, state or national offices. The District is governed by the Bylaws of the Sonoma Valley Health Care District (Revised 5/6/10).

As part of the Sonoma Valley Health Care District, the hospital is supported primarily by revenues from services, augmented by taxpayer support in the form of a parcel tax, charitable bequests, and donations. The Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation and the Hospital Auxiliary play integral roles in our fundraising efforts.

A Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee watches over all expenses related to Measure P, which passed in November, 2009, to enable the hospital to renovate and retrofit the facility.

Sonoma Valley Hospital participates in the Northern California Health Care Authority/Joint Powers Agreement, which works to create a regional entity to pool resources in the interests of greater efficiency in important aspects of healthcare.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, was passed in an effort to provide protection and standardization of protected health information (PHI). Sonoma Valley Hospital has instituted new policies and procedures to support the HIPAA Privacy Regulations (effective April 14, 2003) and protect the confidentiality of your health information. This provision gives you more control over the use of your personal health information and reaffirms your rights to see, copy, and amend your health information, and to learn of any disclosures. HIPAA also creates safeguards to guarantee that only those people who have a real need will access your protected health information.

Sonoma Valley Hospital realizes the importance of protecting your medical information and upholding your privacy rights. We have explained in our Notice of Health Information Privacy Practices how we will use and share health information about you. The notice also informs you of your rights with respect to your health information.

Changes in regulations may require us to update our Notice of Health Information Privacy Practices. We reserve the right to change this Notice. We will maintain a copy of the most current Notice on our website.
